Aviyah is two years old and was born with Anophthalmia (the absence of both eyes) as well as a deletion of the fourteenth chromosome. Aviyah is only the third surviving child in the world with this condition.
It was two days after Aviyah was born when doctors confirmed to Chenzira, Aviyah’s mum, that her baby had not developed eyes or eye sockets. Winnie, Aviyah’s grandmother, stepped in to find support for the family and discovered Guide Dogs' Children and Young People Services, then known as Blind Children UK. Within a short space of time; the family were put in touch with Jenny Holden, a Family Support Worker. Two years later, Jenny still works closely with the family and has helped them make contact and build relationships with a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals, visual impairment teachers, as well as other parents who have children who are blind or partially sighted.
