Student volunteers

There are lots of guide dog owners across the UK who go to school, college or university. So why not dedicate just a little time to make a difference to their lives and the lives of others with sight loss, by becoming a Guide Dogs volunteer? The minimum age for this role is 16 years old.

Give a little time. Make a big difference. Here is how you can get involved:

Volunteer with friends

Get your friends together and organise a bake-off, pub crawl or quiz night in aid of Guide Dogs. Or maybe you're part of a sports club or society at uni – have you ever tried doing your sport with a blindfold on? Or would you like to set up your own Guide Dogs society and organise events throughout the year? You could even rope them into trying out one of our team challenges. Fancy a weekend away with friends in the Lake District? Do it in aid of Guide Dogs!

We’ll give you all the things you need; all you need to do is persuade your friends.

Volunteer with some furry friends

Are you looking for something worthwhile to do over the summer? Or are you just missing your family dog whilst you’re away at uni? Join or even organise one of our sponsored dog walks (known as Dogs Unite) and you can make a difference to the lives of people with sight loss.

Give a new friend their independence

Being a student with sight loss can be lonely and daunting. Imagine how different your life would be with little or no sight. Help out your fellow students (and others) by learning how to guide someone who is blind or partially sighted. You’ll get to directly help those that need your support as well as learning a valuable skill. Not bad for your CV either!

For me it is important to give my time to Guide Dogs as a student because I rely on my independence whilst at university. To enable everyone, fully-sighted or not, to have the same independence and the same incredible opportunities is what motivates me.
