Tribute funds

Every hour, another person in the UK goes blind. When someone loses their sight, we're here to make sure they don't lose their freedom as well.

Whether it's a person or an animal being remembered through the fund, your support will help us create more life-changing partnerships like Diane and Thomas. Family and friends can raise funds for and donate to the fund whenever they want, and we can help you commemorate the life of your loved one on special dates and anniversaries.

The memory of your loved one will live on

A tribute fund is a special Fund which is set up in the name of your loved one to collect donations to Guide Dogs in their memory over time. This can be a touching and personal way to remember someone special and a great way to be able to name a guide dog puppy in their memory.

You can even name a puppy

Many supporters use a tribute fund to raise the £5,000 needed to name a puppy in memory of their loved one. If you name a guide dog puppy, you'll receive personalised updates and photos throughout the dog's first year, and will even get to meet your special pup. Naming a puppy in memory of a loved one is a wonderful tribute to them, ensuring that their spirit, and in many cases their name, lives on in a puppy that is training to become a life-changing guide dog.

Growing your fund

One of the easiest ways to grow the fund is to set up an 'In Memory' page on JustGiving, where you can share the story of the person you're remembering (through words, photos and videos) and explain why you're raising money in their memory. This is a great way to tell friends and family about the fund and allow them to donate to the fund easily, safely and securely, wherever they are, whenever they want. Visit the Guide Dogs Just Giving website to find out more, or to set up a page. If you'd like any support with this, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thomas is my lifeline and until you've become a guide dog owner you don't know the meaning of the word 'freedom'. I thought I was independent with my white cane whilst I bashed my way around, but didn't realise how slow and dependent I was on others until I got Thomas. I then learnt the meaning of being independent and free.

Changing lives

Tribute funds are often set up in order to continue supporting your loved one's favourite charity - carrying on their interest and support in our work. Gary Ratcliffe was a Guide Dogs supporter, and when he died, his widow Sue set up a tribute fund in his name. Sue said: "Gary wanted to change people's lives - he wanted to give them their life back. It gives us such a feeling of pride knowing how we're helping other people through our fundraising. Nothing can bring Gary back, or fill the huge void he left, but by raising these funds and naming these puppies we're keeping Gary's memory very much alive."

They can also be a fitting tribute to a dog lover. Lynne and Joe Cross set up a fund in memory of their daughter, Judy.

Lynne said: "We've been through all the heart-breaking thoughts and emotions - 'what a waste', 'if only', 'could we have done things differently', love, anger, sadness. But on reflection, we try to focus on the positives. Jude had a good life, cramming 60 years' experience into 30. Jude was everyone's friend. She was one of the girls, and one of the boys, comfortable in the company of old and young. We decided to support Guide Dogs as a tribute to her life because of her love of animals, particularly dogs. Jude was a kind, loving and generous girl and we know she would've loved the idea."
