What is Free Wills Month?

Free Wills Month offers people aged 55 and over the opportunity to have a simple* Will written or updated free of charge during March and October.

The scheme uses local solicitors in selected areas around the UK and, although there’s no obligation to leave a gift to Guide Dogs in your Will in order to use this service, we hope you might consider supporting us in this special way.

We know creating a Will can seem expensive or complicated, so we wanted to help make it more straightforward.

How do you take part?

  1. From 1 March 2024, go to www.freewillsmonth.org.uk and enter your postcode to find details of participating solicitors nearest to you, or call 0333 022 0396. If Free Wills Month isn’t in your area, please take a look at our alternatives below.
  2. Contact the most convenient solicitor for you and book an appointment; as long as you’ve contacted your chosen solicitor during the Free Wills Month period, the actual appointment itself can take place at a later date.

Appointments are allocated on a first come first served basis, so to guarantee a slot with your desired solicitor we recommend you contact them as soon as possible during the Free Wills Month period.

The cost of a simple* Will is covered during Free Wills Month. However, if you require a Will that is more complex, your solicitor will advise you of any additional costs which may be applicable.

Whilst there’s no obligation to include a gift to us to take part in Free Wills Month, we offer this service to enable you to do so if you wish.

*Please be aware that the definition of a ‘simple’ Will is at the discretion of the drafting solicitor.

How else could I write my Will for free?

If Free Wills Month isn’t in your area, or you wish to write your Will outside of the dedicated Free Wills Months, you can use our partner Bequeathed, who offer a free online Will writing service all year round. Alternatively, you can request a list of solicitors local to you through our partnership with the National Free Wills Network and write your Will face-to-face instead. Visit our free Will writing service page to find out more.

I thought it may be a complicated process but it was very easy and we had a choice of local solicitors to contact at our convenience. I was so impressed with this service that I would recommend it to anyone.

How can a gift in your Will change lives?

Nearly two out of three guide dogs are only made possible thanks to gifts left in Wills. This vital income helps to provide the guide dogs of the future and our wider services that support adults and children who are visually impaired living in the UK. No one with sight loss should feel isolated. A gift in your Will to Guide Dogs is the gift of freedom.

Anica and Lassie

Gifts left in Wills help to create partnerships like Anica and her guide dog Lassie. Anica has cone-rod dystrophy, a condition which includes the loss of central and colour vision, and has never had full sight. However, when her eyesight deteriorated seriously in her mid-20s, she had more and more problems getting around.

“With my cane, I was so slow getting around and I had near misses with cars and many falls and injuries. I was anxious and my family were worried about my safety.”

After finishing her studies, she moved to work in London with her husband Chris, and applied to be matched with a guide dog. She was soon partnered with Lassie, and eight years later she’s not only regained her confidence and ability to get around safely, but she’s now a professor, mum to two adopted boys and a frequent traveller – all of which she’s managed with Lassie by her side.

“I’m much more relaxed and less stressed with Lassie around and that’s really helped me to ensure I can do what I love - teaching. She guides me around the local area and campus. The students absolutely love her as well.”

Anica also features in our TV advert, where you can see her fulfilling her passion for teaching, with Lassie by her side.

“I’m so grateful for people who leave gifts in their Wills to Guide Dogs. I had doubts about my future in my 20s, but having Lassie has given me my life back and that’s the greatest gift you can give.”
